In March, the Texas Department of Public Safety warned Americans of the dangers of visiting Mexico and asked them to reconsider their travel plans.

“Drug cartel violence and other criminal activity pose a significant security threat to anyone entering Mexico now,” DPS Director Steven McCraw said in a statement. ‘We have a duty to inform the public about safety, travel risks and threats. Based on the volatile nature of the cartel activity and the violence we are seeing there, we urge individuals to avoid travel to Mexico at this time.”

Despite the warning, Americans and visitors from around the world continue to make Playa del Carmen, the neighboring cities of Cancun and Tulum, and other Mexican hotspots their go-to destinations when it comes to booking their upcoming vacations.

Robert Almonte, a former U.S. marshal for the Western District of Texas and retired deputy chief of the El Paso Police Department, told DailyMail.com in March that Americans should consider boycotting all travel to Mexico because the government there is not interested in curbing violence.

“The bottom line is that if someone decides to go to Mexico for whatever reason, you are essentially risking your life. It’s just a dangerous place to be,” he said. ‘I tell people not to go to Mexico. I advocate a boycott of Mexico. I tell people not to go to Mexico. Don’t go to the resorts. Let’s send a message to the Mexican government that they need to get a handle on this situation.

“Right now they don’t care because it’s business as usual. It seems like we don’t care, we are ignoring the situation.’
