As fans mourn the passing of Matthew Perry, many are looking back on the bond the Friends star had with his fellow cast members.
The death of the 54-year-old was announced on Saturday.
Perry died “after drowning in his jacuzzi at home,” sources said Saturday, although no drugs were found at the scene and there was no evidence of foul play.
The actor became known as Chandler Bing in Friends, a role he played for ten years between 1994 and 2004.
The gang reunited in 2021 for a Friends reunion special.
Bond: Many Friends fans are praising the bond the late Matthew Perry had with co-stars Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer, thanks to a 2021 interview that resurfaced shortly after his death was announced Saturday
An interview Perry did with his co-stars Matt LeBlanc, 56, and David Schwimmer, 56, with Entertainment Tonight has resurfaced, showing the bond between the former castmates that has lasted nearly two decades since the show ended.
In the video, Perry can be seen waving and putting his finger to his lips in an attempt to keep quiet on set.
Unknowingly, he is standing in front of the camera doing this, even though Schwimmer is speaking.
After Perry makes the moves a second time, LeBlanc quietly tells him, “Matty, those are the girls doing an interview,” referring to co-stars Jennifer Aniston, 54, Courteney Cox, 59, and Lisa Kudrow, 60.
“You’re on camera,” he whispered.
An embarrassed Perry asked the reporter, “Are you in a three-shot when you see me do that?”
He added with a laugh that he “looked like a fool.”
Shush: In the Entertainment Tonight video, Perry is seen silencing others on the soundstage while their interview is being conducted
Three shots: The actor does not realize that even though Schwimmer is speaking, all three are in the camera shot
As Perry was about to answer a question, his friend Schwimmer tells the reporter that he is going to make his own “quiet” movements “while Matthew is talking.”
At the end of the interview, the five-time Emmy nominee said, “The girls are always better than the boys.” Why would they schedule these interviews on the same stage?’ he asked.
“That’s a great question,” Schwimmer replied.
Upstaged: After Perry makes the moves a second time, LeBlanc quietly tells him, “Matty, those are the girls doing an interview,” referring to co-stars Jennifer Aniston, 54, Courteney Cox, 59, and Lisa Kudrow , 60, to which Perry jokes: ‘The girls always lead the way’
Apology: After Perry apologized for looking ‘like crazy’, Schwimmer made his own ‘hush’ moves on camera
LeBlanc suggested that “all they could afford was one stage,” and the comedy actor then joked, “Apparently all they could afford is one stage.”
On TikTok, a fan saw the clip and wrote of LeBlanc, “As his castmates have said over the years, he ALWAYS looked out for them.”
“Matt covers his best friend with genuine love here,” another wrote, adding, “You can’t fake decades of friendship.”
“I love that Matt and David were a little protective of Matthew,” wrote another.
Friends: Perry and his friends worked on Friends for 10 years and their bond remained strong even after the show ended in 2004. None of them have spoken publicly about their loss yet
Remembrance: An official statement from the show reads: “We are devastated to hear that Matthew Perry has passed away. He was a true gift to all of us. Our hearts go out to his family, loved ones and all his fans’
None of the Friends cast has posted an individual tribute to their longtime friend and colleague on social media.
One of Cox’s followers defended their silence, writing, “Can we please be respectful/mindful that those who loved Matthew need a moment to process such a great loss of someone they have known for so long. ‘is a bit ignorant.’
However, a post on Friends and Warner Bros TV’s Instagram pages read: “We are devastated to learn of the passing of Matthew Perry.”
“He was a true gift to all of us. Our hearts go out to his family, loved ones and all his fans.”
