Festival-goers lash out at Jay Sean and Ashanti for holding the mic in front of the crowd instead of singing at a concert in Perth: ‘Pay $200 for a ticket to hear the crowd sing’

Festivalgoers praised Jay Sean and Ashanti’s performances at Fridayz Live in Perth earlier this month.

Thousands of RnB fans attended the concert at HBF Park on November 5 to enjoy a number of global stars including TLC, Akon and Craig David.

However, many in attendance were disappointed with Jay Sean and Ashanti’s acts after they spent most of their performances pointing the microphone at the audience instead of singing.

A frustrated festival-goer shared a video on TikTok of the crowd singing Ashanti’s hit Foolish as she danced on stage.

“Pay $200 for a ticket to hear the audience sing and not the performer.” This went on all night,” they wrote.

Another person also expressed disappointment, writing, “If Ashanti ‘performs’ at Fridayz Live. Disappointing was an understatement.’

“Stopping the music is the worst. I’d rather she sing along to her song playing on speaker,” commented a third.

“Are we performing for them or are they performing for us?” wondered another.

Other attendees also criticized Jay Sean’s performance on his 2009 hit Down, with one person claiming it was a “real disappointment”.

“I would have been so mad if I paid for all this… you’re going to hear them sing, not the crowd,” said another.

The Fridayz Live festival has played in Perth, Brisbane and Sydney.

Hosted by Abbie Chatfield and Fatman Scoop, the gig features Shaggy, Jay Sean, Dru Hill, Lumidee, Macklemore, YO! Mafia, Havana Brown and Akon.

TLC, Craig David and Ashanti also performed at the event.
