A French police officer was stabbed several times in the neck and hand in a police station, local media report.

The attacker pulled out a knife and allegedly threw himself at the officer in the hallway of the La Rochelle police station.

The police officer was walking through the building’s reception area around 1pm this afternoon when he was stabbed repeatedly by the man.

The man was quickly overpowered and arrested, regional newspaper South-East reports. His motivation behind the attack is currently unknown.

The victim suffered neck and hand injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening.

The French police union Unité SGP issued an outraged statement after the incident, calling for the installation of security gates at the police station.

We are once again shocked by this needless violence against the police,” the statement quoted Sud Ouest as saying.

This attack is violent and traumatic. We remain vigilant regarding the health status of our injured colleague. Our union organization has contacted our management several times about installing a security gate.

“The safety of our colleagues is invaluable and we hope this long-awaited device arrives as soon as possible,” it added.
