The New York Giants are adding quarterback Drew Lock two years after the backup signal caller was included in Denver’s infamous trade for Russell Wilson.
A Giants source confirmed the deal to DailyMail.com. The one-year, $5 million deal was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Lock spent the past two seasons behind Geno Smith in Seattle, appearing in four games in 2023 while going 1-1 as a starter. For his career, Lock is 9-14 as a starter after serving as the Broncos’ top quarterback for parts of the 2019, 2020 and 2021 seasons.
But perhaps his biggest impact on the NFL came in the Broncos’ ill-fated trade for Wilson, who was fired in Denver this offseason after signing a $245 million extension in September 2022. The Broncos will now pay the remaining $38 million of Wilson’s salary. after agreeing to a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier this week.
As bad as Wilson’s contract for Denver was, the trade itself may have been even worse. Not only did the Broncos offload Lock, who had shown promise, but Denver also surrendered two firsts, two seconds and a fifth-round pick to Seattle in exchange for Wilson, a former Super Bowl winner.
The New York Giants are adding quarterback Drew Lock, likely as a backup
In 2022, Lock and five draft picks were traded by Denver to Seattle for Russell Wilson
The trade resulted in Seattle adding promising left tackle Charles Cross, defensive end Boye Mafe, Pro Bowl cornerback Devon Witherspoon and outside linebacker Derick Hall.
Wilson was benched in Denver last season and has since claimed the Broncos did so in an attempt to pressure him to renegotiate his contract.
Lock projects as a likely backup to Daniel Jones, who is recovering from season-ending knee surgery after going 1-5 as a starter in 2023.
The Giants could also make further additions under center in next month’s NFL Draft, which is expected to be deep at quarterback.
In addition to the sixth overall pick, the Giants also have two second-round picks, which should give New York GM Joe Schoen the opportunity to add any number of quarterbacks such as Washington star Michael Penix Jr., Oregon’s Bo Nix , or Michael Pratt from Tulane.
