A homeless man has been charged with murder after allegedly stabbing a stranger to death at a popular swimming destination.
Police were called to Frankston Pier, in Melbourne’s south-east, after reports of an attack just after 6am on Saturday.
A 45-year-old man from Cranbourne North was found unconscious and died at the scene.
Shortly after the gruesome discovery, police arrested a 36-year-old man on the beach.
The man, who has no fixed address, has been charged with murder over the elderly man’s death.
He will appear in court in Melbourne on Sunday.
The crime scene was cordoned off on Saturday afternoon while investigators and emergency services searched for evidence.
“Detectives from the homicide squad are currently investigating and are not looking for anyone else involved in the incident at this time,” Victoria Police said in a statement.
“It is also believed that the parties involved did not know each other.”
