Legendary jockey Frankie Dettori has revealed he has dislocated his shoulder, posting a photo on social media from his hospital bed.

The superstar jockey was racing at New York’s Aqueduct Racecourse when he was thrown from his horse at the starting line on Thursday.

In a social media post, he wrote: ‘I appreciate all the messages. I am doing great! I dislocated my right shoulder – my team here at the hospital put it back together.

‘Thank you for the concerned messages, it means a lot to me.’

Dettori was due to compete in the final race of the ‘Belmont at the Big A’ competition when he was thrown from his two-year-old mare Pretty Liza and reportedly landed on her back.

New York Racing Association communications officer Keith McCalmont wrote on Twitter that Dettori was able to walk to an ambulance, from where he was taken to Jamaica Hospital.

In a later update, he said that a status of the Dettori constituency would be announced today.

Dettori, 53, was on the list six times on Friday, eight times on Saturday and three times on Sunday.

But given his injury, it would take some effort to get back on a horse in the coming days.

The Italian moved to California at the end of 2023 after a 32-year career in Britain, where he established himself as the world’s most famous jockey.

He continues to impress in the United States, with a total of 64 winners to his name.
