French mainstay Mohamed Haouas has been sentenced to a year in prison for domestic violence.
The 29-year-old was arrested Friday afternoon after seeing his wife beaten near a popular shopping center in the Hérault, France.
reports claiming that a dispute arose between the two after he saw his wife smoking a cigarette, despite her telling Haouas that she had quit.
The Montpellier player tried to explain his actions, claiming: “She has a right to smoke, but the problem is that she lied to me.
“I told myself if she can lie about the cigarette, she can lie about other things. I fantasized things, I got jealous. I got angry and lost control,” he said.

Haouas had been in custody since the incident before facing an expedited court hearing on Tuesday, where he was found guilty.
In response to the incident, the French Rugby Federation said Haouas’s actions were “unacceptable and incompatible with representing our country at the international level.”
In addition, the 29-year-old’s possible summer move from Montpellier to Clermont – which had been agreed – has now been cancelled.
Clermont released a statement condemning Haouas’ actions, insisting that he was “completely opposed to our identity” and “will not be able to wear our colors on the field.”
The France international has had similar controversial actions on the pitch, including his four-week ban for headbutting Scotland’s Ben White in the Six Nations.
And last year, Haouas received an 18-month suspended prison sentence for his role in a series of burglaries in 2014.
The 29-year-old has made 16 appearances for France, but could have ended his chances to add to that with his actions off the pitch.
