France started their U21 European Championship campaign with a 2-1 victory over Italy in Group D.
Goals from Rennes Arnaud Kalimuendo and Lyon striker Bradley Barcola were enough to see Sylvain Ripoll’s side take all three points, whose side came on as a substitute for Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise and finished the game with ten men after the red card from Louis Bade.
Italy, with Newcastle target Sandro Tonali, provided consolation through Turin striker Pietro Pellegri, but will try to recover from Sunday’s defeat to Switzerland.
Earlier in the day, the Swiss defeated Norway 2-1 to give them a winning start to the tournament.
