GWS showed glimpses of a what could’ve been season, firing early against an ill-disciplined Essendon and surging late to defeat the 14th placed Bombers 14.12 (96) to 10.9 (69) in a vicious bottom of the table bout.

Jake Stringer clashed with Harry Himmelberg in the opening two minutes of the Saturday afternoon contest marked by biff-ups

The Giants logged their sixth win of the season, but it wasn’t without controversy. Fans blasted a call from umpires that granted Toby Greene a certain goal late in the third quarter that flipped the momentum.

There was plenty of feeling from the opening whistle. Despite their lowly ladder positions, the two sides locked horns from the opening whistle with two goals and even more pushes and shoves as the contest got heated early.

Stringer’s jersey was shredded off his back after only a few minutes, as Essendon’s poor discipline cost them the match

Within two minutes of the Saturday afternoon fixture, shoulders bumped and heads clashed as Bombers star Jake Stringer came out of the blocks with a hot head and his jersey ripped off his chest after gifting Harry Himmelberg a successful free kick.

‘There’s definitely a bit of feeling as you can see,’ Saints great Nick Dal Santo said on Fox Footy.

The Bombers settled late in the first quarter, in a contest that resembled finals quality footy despite featuring two sides placed in the bottom five.

Jesse Hogan takes a cracking mark in contest with Brandon Zerk-Thatche, scoring four goals for GWS

Giants forward James Peatling was subbed off after a brutal head knock with the shoulder of Mason Redman as the sides battled out for the lead.

GWS led 49-47 at the halftime break, but it was Essendon who slotted back to back goals in the third to regain the lead.

Hogan took control of the attack, kicking four and taking 12 marks while teammate Leek Aleer towered above Essendon forwards to as frustrations simmered over once more.

With momentum at the backs, the Giants kicked clear in the final term for a relieving win in what has been a disappointing season.
