At least four foreign tourists were killed and 15 others were injured after their minibus fell into an abyss 100 feet below a highway after visiting the Machu Picchu ancient ruins on Sunday.
The Peruvian government said Monday that two of the tourist who died were visiting are from Colombia. The origins of the other two victims remained unknown.
The injured victims were identified as Julie Clard, Tom Lecuyer, Adrien Colotte and Timothee Malexeiux of France and Hugo Marijin and Francis Floya of Canada. The others were identified as Jip Nekker, of the Netherlands; Myrto Arvaniti and Andres Sofianos of Greece; Hana Weinberger and Kfier Givony of Israel; and Cecilia Luis and Pedro Batuecas of Argentina.
Sherwin Zevallos, the driver of the mini bus, a tour guide and a tourist of Peruvian nationality were also hurt in the crash.
‘We deeply regret the loss of human lives and express our deepest condolences to their families,’ said Roberto Sánchez, Peru’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism.

Malexieux told reporters from the city of Cusco that they were all returning from visiting the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu and that he was sleeping when the capsize occurred.
‘I’m physically fine,’ he added briefly in Spanish.
Sánchez indicated that the four deceased are in a morgue in Cusco.
The tragic accident took place in an area known as Abra Málaga, complicated by the fog and at an altitude of about 14,200 feet.
A jewel of the Peruvian tourism industry, Machu Picchu was built in the fifteenth century as a religious sanctuary of the Incas and is located in the Amazon of southeastern Peru at about 8,200 feet of altitude.

Road transport surveillance is weak and aid is so slow and disorganized that several injured people die near the tracks, according to experts.
Poor people usually die in road accidents. Experts have indicated for nearly two decades that comprehensive transportation reform is the solution, but no government has initiated it.
Between January and October 2021, some 2,053 people died in traffic accidents in Peru, according to the latest figures available.
