Ricciardo sat down with The Project’s Georgie Tunny, where he was asked about his now infamous stunt of drinking champagne out of his boot.

“I don’t know if you know, there’s a shoe epidemic right now, not just here but all over the world and you were the cause,” Tunny joked.

“A guy just about ran across the street for a picture and then started taking off his shoe,” he said.

Despite how eager the fan was, Ricciardo had to decline the offer.

“It was still daylight so it wasn’t the time for it and I hadn’t won a race lately so it wasn’t right, but the shoey is real,” he said.

“Australia should be proud.”

He then revealed that he loved the post-race celebration so much that he dug deeper into the roots.

“I looked up the history, I believe it goes back to the very, very early days, I want to say I looked it up and I think it’s German, German ancestry,” he said.

Tunny wouldn’t have a bar of it, saying it was claimed as an ‘Australian tradition’.

Ricciardo also revealed how he felt about his upcoming ‘double homecoming’, as he signed up as third driver for Redbull in Australia.

“I’m definitely coming in more relaxed this weekend,” he said.

“My role is different from the last 10 years, but it still feels like there’s a lot of energy and I feel like everyone in town is still excited and excited.”
