Formula 1 fans have praised Oscar Piastri after his stunning drive gave the McLaren star a famous victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

The young Australian surprised Charles Leclerc with a daring move at Turn One in Baku and held his position despite the Ferrari driver’s many attacks during a thrilling race on Sunday afternoon.

Ahead of the weekend’s action, McLaren confirmed that Piastri would make way for team-mate Lando Norris as the Briton battles for the drivers’ world title against Max Verstappen.

But Piastri proved why he is widely regarded as a future world champion with an incredible performance, taking his second Grand Prix victory in the Baku sun.

And F1 fans believe Sunday’s display has shown that Piastri should be the man in charge at McLaren, not Norris.

“Literally showing what a number 1 driver looks like,” said one fan on X.

He’s more WC [World Championship] “I think Lando is better material than Lando,” said another fan.

A third fan said: ‘He’ll be champion before Norris.’

One fan went one step further and compared Piastri to three-time world champion Max Verstappen: ‘Oscar Piastri is the most talented driver since Verstappen.’

A delighted Piastri said after crossing the line: ‘After the stop I saw that we were quite close again and I felt that we had more grip. I knew I had to go for it because I knew that if I didn’t get in at the beginning of the stint, I would never get in.

‘There’s no such thing as a relaxing lap here. It was hard work, but it’s one of my better races.’
