DENVER — Colorado legal officials on Tuesday approved an agreement with Jenna Ellis, a former lawyer for former President Donald Trump, that will ban her from practicing law in the state for three years after she pleaded guilty to helping Trump try to win the election. Undo 2020.
Ellis tearfully pleaded guilty in October to a felony charge of aiding and abetting false statements in Fulton County, Georgia. She was one of 18 Trump co-defendants charged in a sweeping case involving the former president’s campaign to overturn President Joe Biden’s 2020 victory in Georgia.
Ellis was previously convicted in Colorado of making false statements about the 2020 election, including that the election was “stolen” from Trump. These falsehoods were part of an ongoing campaign by Trump allies that helped lead to the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
The latest case was brought by Colorado legal authorities following Ellis’ plea in Georgia. The suit states that Ellis “caused significant actual harm in various ways. It undermined the American public’s confidence in the presidential election process.”
It also noted that Ellis’ crime was “attributable to her conduct as an accomplice, not as a principal.”
Ellis, a native of Colorado who occasionally visits her home state, lives in Florida and could not immediately be reached for comment. She is the latest in a slew of people charged or punished for helping Trump try to overturn his 2020 loss.
