Former Tottenham goalkeeper saves THREE penalties from three different players in the same game

Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga saved two penalties and another was retaken before striker Cristhian Stuani scored from the spot deep into stoppage time as they beat visitors Athletic Bilbao 2-1 in LaLiga on Sunday.

Alex Berenguer’s tame penalty was saved in the first half when Gazzaniga moved to his left and held the ball.

And Bilbao’s luck from the spot got worse after the break as Inaki Williams’ weak effort was easily claimed by the former Tottenham man.

However, VAR ruled that the penalty should be retaken because Gazzaniga’s feet were off the line.

And Herrera pushed for the rematch, but his effort was also saved by the Argentine goalkeeper, much to the delight of the home crowd.

Gazzaniga received widespread praise on social media, but there was also criticism over the quality of the punishments, with viewers labeling them as ‘three of the worst you will ever see’.

The visitors were immediately punished after Berenguer’s poor miss when Colombian midfielder Yaser Asprilla put Girona ahead in the 39th minute, sending a dangerous left-footed cross from outside the penalty area into the bottom left corner past keeper Alex Padilla.

Oihan Sancet scored Athletic’s equalizer two minutes later, but Stuani converted his penalty in the 99th minute to seal all three points for the hosts and end their four-match winless run in LaLiga.

Girona is eleventh in the standings with twelve points from nine games, while Bilbao is fifth with fourteen points.
