Former Swiss referee Urs Meier has berated Jose Mourinho, claiming the Roma boss should be suspended from football for a year over his antics against referee Anthony Taylor after the Europa League final.
Mourinho’s side were beaten 4-1 last Wednesday after a 1-1 draw in Budapest in Budapest.
It was a stop-start game, with Roma’s bench engaging in several antics on the touchline as England official Taylor handed out seven yellow cards to their players, while the Portuguese coach also received a yellow card.
It came after several tight, but ultimately correct, decisions that fell in Sevilla’s favour, including a potential handball penalty for Roma that was not given, along with Taylor ordering the Spanish side’s decisive penalty retaken after Rui Patricio of his line had come. .
After the match, Mourinho knocked Taylor down, claiming he “appeared Hispanic,” before confronting him in the Puskas Arena car park and launching a rant of swear words at the referee, including labeling him a “f****** shame’.

Mourinho has since been charged by UEFA for his actions and criticized by many in the footballing community, but Meier – who was forced to quit after receiving death threats for kicking a Sol Campbell goal for England at Euro 2004 in a quarter-final against Portugal disapproved – felt that the punishment should go even further.
“It’s just a no-go that he threw the referee at the fans,” he told the Urs Meier podcast.
“He already did that when he was a Chelsea coach with Anders Frisk (former Swedish referee who took on the infamous match of the Blues against Barcelona in 2005), who received death threats and ended his career as a result.”

Meier continued: ‘You have to take over the podium from him and consider whether he can no longer participate in international matches for a year.
Meanwhile, the Premier League also condemned the treatment Taylor received last week, saying in a statement: “We are shocked and appalled by the unacceptable abuse directed at Anthony Taylor and his family when they returned from the UEFA Europa League final.
“No one should have to suffer the unforgivable behavior they endured yesterday. Anthony is one of our most experienced and experienced match officials and we fully support him and his family.”
Roma supporters clearly hadn’t recovered from last week’s final when they unfurled a banner at the Stadio Olympico on Sunday during their final Serie A match against Spezia reading: ‘Taylor f****** shame’.
