A former Premier League footballer has been rushed to hospital after being involved in a terrifying car crash.

The 43-year-old played for West Ham, Fulham and Leicester during his six-year stay in England between 2006 and 2012.

In 2016 he ended his active career and is now a coach.

John Paintsil, now assistant coach of Ghana, was travelling with national coach Otto Addo and goalkeeping coach Fatawu Dauda back to Ghana’s capital Accra on Saturday after watching the national cup final, when their Toyota Land Cruiser collided with a pick-up truck.

All three men were taken to hospital after the accident, with the Ghana Football Association releasing a statement with an update on their conditions.

Ghanaian national coach Otto Addo (pictured) and goalkeeper coach Fatawu Dauda were also in the car. According to the Ghanaian Football Association, all three men are now in a ‘stable condition’.

Photos have emerged of the crashed vehicle, with one side badly dented and its wheels missing.

The statement said: ‘Members of the Black Stars technical team were involved in a road accident while returning from Tarkwa.

‘The vehicle carrying head coach Otto Addo, assistant coach John Paintsil and goalkeeping coach Fatawu Dauda avoided a head-on collision with a pickup truck that veered off the lane, causing some damage to the vehicle.

‘All three members of the technical team are in stable condition and will undergo further medical examinations upon return to Accra.’

Photos and videos have emerged of the wreckage after the crash, showing the vehicle badly dented on one side and missing wheels.

Paintsil has played 89 caps for Ghana and has appeared at two World Cups, in 2006 and 2010. Ghana almost became the first African team to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup, but lost in the quarter-finals on penalties to Uruguay, following a controversial handball by Luis Suarez.

Ghana will play Angola and Niger next week in the qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Nations. Paintsil and his fellow coaches must undergo a number of medical examinations before they know whether they will be allowed to stand on the sidelines for the two matches.
