A former Premier League manager and player is now working for free in a bid to help his club out of financial trouble.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle boss Duncan Ferguson has given up his wages at the club under threat of being put under administration.

Former striker Ferguson played for the likes of Rangers, Newcastle and Everton before taking charge of the latter twice on an interim basis.

The 52-year-old took over as manager of Caley Thistle at the start of last season and has made a remarkable move in an attempt to keep the team afloat.

The Scottish League One team must raise £200,000 over the next two to end the imminent threat of rule.

Ferguson had already agreed to cut his salary from £3,000 a week to £1,200 a week and has now gone a step further.

Commenting on the situation, he said: “I have given up my wages to try and help the club. I now work for nothing.

“That’s my own decision anyway, to try to help the club through all this.

‘The players are concerned, yes. They have contracts they can capitalize on, but it’s the people around the stadium, the staff, everyone’s jobs that are at stake.

“I think you know that since I’ve been here I’ve made cuts and cuts.

‘When I realized the position the club is in, having to raise £200,000 this month, I decided I didn’t need to receive my wages.

‘I am now going to work for nothing to help them get through this. The fate of the staff was on my mind. That’s always the case.

Ferguson hopes to help save the cash-strapped Scottish club from the threat of governance

‘I like to think that I am a caring person and I like to take care of my staff and the people around me.

“Right now I’m trying to get through it as best I can and trying to keep gas in the car and food on the table.”

Ferguson replaced Billy Dodds last September when his first season ended in relegation after a play-off defeat to Hamilton Accies.
