Former NFL star Richard Sherman was arrested early Saturday on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to the Washington State Patrol.
In a probable cause statement, Trooper Jordan Hazzard-Thomas, who assisted in responding to the traffic stop, reported that he spoke with Sherman and noticed “the odor of intoxicants” and that Sherman’s eyes appeared to be “bloodshot and watery.”
Sherman was stopped by the Washington State Patrol for going 75 mph in a 60 mph zone around 2 a.m. local time, according to an initial appearance document obtained by CNN.
Emails seeking comment on Sherman’s arrest were sent Saturday to a representative listed on his social media sites and to an attorney who has represented him in the past. The King County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement that Sherman is expected to have a hearing Monday.
A three-time All-Pro cornerback, Sherman had an 11-year career in the NFL and helped lead the Seattle Seahawks to a Super Bowl title during the 2013 season.
He was one of the premier defensive standouts of his generation and was named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s All-Decade Team of the 2010s in 2020.
Sherman spent seven seasons in Seattle before heading to San Francisco for three. He also played for Tampa Bay and during his college years at Stanford University.
More recently, he worked as a football analyst, including as a pre- and post-game analyst on Amazon’s “Thursday Night Football” coverage.
Sherman pleaded guilty in Seattle in 2022 to two charges of driving under the influence and domestic violence the year before. He also admitted speeding in a road construction area.
