The best game of Evans’ career came in 1972 when he scored two rushing touchdowns and one receiving in a 45-21 thrashing of the New Orleans Saints.

But that season was cut short early when he broke his leg against the Denver Broncos.

Evans remained with the Giants through the 1973 season before leaving for Washington in 1974, which turned out to be the final season of his career.

“The hardest thing to realize when you leave the game is the fact that you no longer get freebies.” he said in an interview with Newsday.

‘You no longer get checks from people you’ve never met because they know who you are. You don’t sign autographs. Nobody wants you.’

According to his obituary, Evans’ body was donated to researchers looking into the NFL’s concussion protocol.
