- The chef commented that it is not ‘efficient’
A former McDonald’s chef has revealed why the fast food chain doesn’t offer onion rings as a side dish, despite many customers begging for the fried vegetables.
Based in Illinois Mike Haraczwho worked at the franchise until 2019, used TikTok to shed light on why McDonald’s wouldn’t sell onion rings as a side dish because it’s not “efficient.”
The chef noted that if McDonald’s was going to sell the fried vegetables, they would have to charge more.
He explained that the chain is all about making money and efficiency, adding that because so much money is made from selling fries, there is no reason to disrupt the flow with any other side.

The chef noted that the chain is all about making money and efficiency, adding that because so much money is made from selling fries, there is no reason to disrupt the flow.
In a clip posted to the video platform, the former McDonald’s chef explained the real reason behind the chain’s reluctance to sell onion rings.
‘McDonald’s is most profitable when it is most efficient and that efficiency lies in scale.
“If (the chain) can sell all the same thing, if McDonald’s could sell one thing and that’s that, that would be great for them,” he said at the beginning of the video.
Mike then noted that this has caused the chain to ‘reduce’ the number of choices available as a party.
He then explained what would happen if the fast food chain introduced onion rings as a side dish.
“So let’s say McDonald’s decides to introduce onion rings, it would probably be a limited-time offer just for efficiency’s sake. It would be something special,” he said.
‘Imagine how many people would order fewer fries and order onion rings instead.
‘Right now, because of the amount of fries it sells, because of how efficient it is, and most importantly, how overly profitable it is for (the chain), so the profit margin on its fries is pretty bad how they charge way too much for their fries compared to other menu items.”
The former chef noted that offering onion rings as an option would be “much less profitable” for the chain.

“Would you be willing to pay a lot more for your onion rings?” he said that before McDonald’s would be added, “you would have to charge an extra dollar or even more.”
“So if they ever start making onion rings, it’s very likely it will be a very limited offering,” he said at the end of the video.
