Former goalkeeper star Mark Bosnich believes Mat Ryan could still be Socceroos’ number 1 goalkeeper at the World Cup, but acknowledged that it is a concern that he is now just the backup glove man at club Copenhagen.

Ryan, 30, has lost his spot in the Danish Superliga to Polish young gunner Kamil Grabara.

And his rival between the sticks has engaged in a public battle of words, declaring that he “sees no competition” when it comes to the Aussie glove man.

Ryan has chosen not to bite back, but tensions between the pair would understandably be frosty.

Speaking as an expert on Stan Sport, Bosnich pointed out that Japan-based Mitch Langerak is biting Ryan’s ankles, and will be strongly considered by coach Graham Arnold to take over from Ryan.

“Graham values (Ryan) very, very highly – he is also his captain. But in the end he will have to do what is best for the team, he knows that,” he said.

“They (FC Copenhagen) changed managers two weeks ago… they have conceded as many goals this season as they have all season.

“Now that Grabara is playing the way he is, it will be very difficult for Mat to get into the team.

‘When Graham Arnold is playing an in-house game (once the Socceroos arrive in Qatar), Mat will need to show his fitness.”

Bosnich, the former Aston Villa star who also played for Manchester United and Chelsea and played for Australia between 1993 and 2000, said Arnold should not choose players based on reputation.

Sharpness in Socceroos training will be key, with Les Blues able to call on a galaxy of stars including PSG superstar Kylian Mbappé.

“The proof is in the pudding against France,” Bosnich added.

“You could have (Thibaut) Courtois and David de Gea in the goal – if they (France) sing that day it will be very difficult for everyone.”

The Socceroos will play defending champions France in Group D on November 23, followed by Tunisia (November 26) and Denmark (December 1).
