Former Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani had a moment to forget in Boca Juniors’ Copa Sudamericana clash with Nacional Potosi on Wednesday evening.

Cavani, 37, who spent two years at Old Trafford between 2020 and 2022, joined Boca last summer and has had a positive first year in Argentina but missed a sitter in his last appearance for the club.

He looked set for a certain goal when he burst into the penalty area and latched onto a cross from his teammate, but somehow he tipped the ball wide of the goal from just three yards out, despite having the whole goal to aim . bee.

Cavani himself ended up in the net, but not the ball, as he fell to his knees in disbelief.

The Uruguayan quickly recovered, with his manager applauding the team’s move, but it was still a truly shocking miss from one of modern football’s greatest strikers.

Fortunately for Cavani, his moment of horror did not recur as Boca won 4-0 against their Bolivian opponents.

Cavani did get on the scoresheet in the 14th minute, while another ex-United player, Marcos Rojo, completed the scoring in the second half.

The result meant Boca finished in second place in Group D behind Fortaleza after gaining eleven points from their six games.

Cavani played in four of those matches and scored three goals.

Boca now have to play a team who have come over from the Copa Libertadores for a place in the last 16, and they will hope that Cavani can quickly put Wednesday’s miss behind him for that match.

Boca, meanwhile, also have the league to concentrate on, which is only three games old. They have collected four points from a possible nine so far, leaving them three points behind early pace setters Racing Club.
