Former England boss Gareth Southgate ‘in contention to replace Premier League manager if poor start to the season continues’

Former England manager Gareth Southgate is reportedly a potential candidate to replace a struggling Premier League manager.

Southgate resigned as England boss following the Three Lions’ crushing 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin in July.

Since then he has been linked with a number of jobs, most notably to take over from Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

And The Guardian claim he is also being considered by Crystal Palace, while Oliver Glasner is under increasing pressure.

Former Brighton boss Graham Potter and ex-West Ham manager David Moyes are also seen as options, according to the report.

Glasner retains the immediate support of senior members of Crystal Palace’s hierarchy, but concerns are mounting over the team’s poor start to the season.

The south London side are one of only four clubs in the Premier League without a win in their first eight games. Their latest setback came from Monday’s defeat to Nottingham Forest, a result that leaves them in the relegation zone.

The defeat means Palace have equaled their worst start to a Premier League season have failed to win any of their first eight games of a top-flight season for the first time since 1992–93.

Sources indicate that while the club are keen to continue supporting Glasner, if the team remains without a Premier League win heading into November’s international break, the Eagles board could reconsider their position on the Austrian.

Palace chairman Steve Parish, who will ultimately decide Glasner’s future, has shown in the past that he is prepared to sack managers if the club is in real danger of relegation.

There was plenty of optimism heading into the season after Glasner led Palace to an encouraging seven-match unbeaten run, six of which were wins, at the end of last season.

And while last season’s impressive run means Glasner has credit in the bank, Palace will consider their options as their struggles continue.

It is acknowledged that Michael Olise’s departure to Bayern Munich in the summer was a major blow to the team.

Nevertheless, Glasner is expected to make the necessary improvements to revive the team’s fortunes after their disappointing start.

It is clear that Glasner has explored a tactical switch in the hope of turning the results around.

The Austrian has relied on a five-man defensive system, but it is understood that in recent days the coach has looked at the possibility of deploying a back four in view of the team’s attacking play.
