Former Dutch international Quincy Promes has been charged with smuggling 1,370 kilos of cocaine, the country’s public prosecutor’s office has announced.

The 31-year-old was allegedly involved in importing two shipments of cocaine of approximately 650 kg and 713 kg respectively.

Both parties were intercepted in Antwerp in January 2020, the Dutch newspaper reports NOS.

Promes and another 31-year-old Dutchman have both been accused of importing cocaine through the port in Belgium.

Dutch media report that a preliminary hearing will take place on June 5.

Promes’ attorney, Robert Malewicz, declined to comment on the allegations when asked The parole.

“I will provide further explanation at Monday’s hearing,” Malewicz said.

The striker will not be at the hearing as he plays for Spartak Moscow as the Russian Premier League season ends on Saturday.

Promes also faces aggravated assault charges after being accused of stabbing a cousin in the knee.

The fight took place during a family event in July 2020 in Amsterdam.

In March, the Dutch Public Prosecution Service asked for a two-year prison sentence.

Promes was initially charged with attempted murder, but the judge ruled that there was no evidence of attempted murder or attempted manslaughter.

The footballer had previously denied the allegations but has since been heard to confess to the stabbing in a police wiretap.

The conclusion of this case is expected to be heard on Monday.

Promes was playing for Ajax at the time of the incident, before moving to Spartak Moscow in 2021.

It was the second time Promes joined the Russian side after playing for the club for four years between 2014 and 2018.

During his career, Promes also played for FC Twente, Go Ahead Eagles and the Spanish Sevilla.

The attacker has passed through the Netherlands 50 times since his international debut in 2014 and scored seven goals.

The last of his caps was at Euro 2020, where he came off the bench against the Czech Republic in the Netherlands’ last 16.
