Delaware police said they first received a report last December from the Delaware Division of Family Services alleging that a former teacher at Stanton Middle School, in Willmington, had a sexual relationship some nine years earlier had with a young student.

After further investigation, police determined that the teacher and student had engaged in a sexual relationship over the course of two months, initially beginning in October 2014.

Police obtained a warrant for Messer’s arrest and took the former teacher into custody at her home in Greenville, South Carolina, on April 26 last month.

The former high school teacher was held at the South Carolina Department of Corrections until Monday, when she was extradited to Delaware.

Messer is charged with two counts of sexual abuse of a child by a counselor, ten counts of third-degree rape, and ten counts of fourth-degree rape.

Messer was subsequently charged and is being held at the Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution on $310,000 bond.

Police said Messer resigned from the Red Clay Consolidated School District, which includes Stanton Middle School, in November 2014.

Messer was later hired by Legacy Early College, a public charter school in Greenville, South Carolina.

She first became certified as a teacher in South Carolina in July 2015, notes the state’s education department website.

On May 5, the State Board of Education ruled that Messer has suspended her teaching license “as a result of her arrest for 22 counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor.”

Police said they would only release a limited amount of information about this case due to the sensitivity and concern for the victim.

The Delaware Police Department asked anyone with more information to come forward as they investigate further.
