Former Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears catcher Sam Hurd ‘released from federal prison: 10 years on a 15-year sentence for attempted purchase and drug trafficking’

Former Dallas Cowboys catcher Sam Hurd has reportedly been released from prison, after a decade behind bars on drug trafficking charges.

According to the instant newsHurd is now in community confinement in San Antonio following his release from federal prison on January 31.

The 37-year-old’s scheduled release date is reported to be May 30.

Hurd was sentenced to 15 years in prison after being arrested in December 2011 outside a Chicago steakhouse for attempting to buy and distribute drugs, but was caught in a federal sting operation.

Then Hurd, 28 at the time, was a member of the Chicago Bears. Naturally, his NFL career ended before the 2013 sentencing.

Former NFL wide receiver Sam Hurd was reportedly released from federal prison late last month.

However, he avoided life in prison by pleading guilty to one charge of attempting to purchase and distribute large quantities of marijuana and cocaine.

According to a federal complaint, via AP, Hurd told an undercover agent that he wanted 5 to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana per week to distribute in the Chicago area.

Hurd claimed he was already distributing 4 kilograms a week, according to the complaint. A kilogram is approximately 2.2 pounds.

At the time, Hurd was in the first season of a three-year contract with the Bears, valued at more than $5 million.

Prior to his time in Chicago, Hurd had five seasons with the Cowboys from 2006 to 2010. He was an undrafted prospect out of Northern Illinois.

Over his entire NFL career, Hurd played in 77 games, racking up 53 receptions, 739 yards, and two touchdowns.
