A former Collingwood player has been charged over a crash that killed two elderly women and injured a 12-year-old girl in Western Australia.

Emergency services were called about 9am on Friday after reports of a crash between two cars and a road train pulling two trailers on the Brand Highway in Cooljarloo, about 170km north of Perth.

WA Police allege 38-year-old Shannon John Cox was behind the wheel of a Toyota Prado traveling southbound when it collided with a Suzuki Ignis traveling northbound.

A white Volvo train was also traveling north on the same road.

On Saturday, Cox was charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death and was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on June 18.

Two women – the 82-year-old driver and her 83-year-old passenger – who were riding in the hatchback died at the scene. A 12-year-old girl was also injured.

Neither Cox nor the 31-year-old male driver of the Volvo truck were injured.

Five St John ambulances and two RAC Rescue helicopters were deployed to the scene, but the helicopters were later withdrawn and did not need to attend.

Cox, who lives in the Geraldton suburb of Spalding, appeared at the Northbridge Magistrates Court in Perth on Saturday.

Major Crash investigators are seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed the crash.

Cox played 25 games for the Magpies before retiring in 2009.
