Former Celtic star reveals why Ange Postecoglou is rejecting the Premier League
Former Celtic star reveals big chance that could stop Ange Postecoglou from leaving Scotland for Premier League amid Tottenham and Leicester links
Former Celtic star Jackie McNamara has tried to allay concerns among the fan base amid speculation over Ange Postecoglou’s departure.
Postecoglou, 57, has defied the doubters to thrive at Parkhead since his arrival in 2021, propelling Celtic back to the top flight of Scottish football, with the club on track to win the treble this season.
As a result, the former Socceroos boss has been linked to the bright lights of the Premier League and bookmakers have listed Postecoglou as a contender to take the vacancies from either Tottenham or Leicester.
But McNamara, who made more than 250 appearances for Celtic during his 10-year spell at the club, believes the appeal of European football will convince Postecoglou to commit to the Scottish club.
“I think Ange will want to be better in Europe,” McNamara said, according to the Daily Record.
The lure of Champions League football could convince Ange Postecoglou to stay with Celtic
Former Celtic star Jackie McNamara is confident the Australian will turn down England’s interest
“He wants to get into the Champions League and impress and do well on that podium. I thought they were excellent for 60 minutes in some games this year. If you get opportunities at that level, you have to grab them.’
Celtic finished bottom of their Champions League group this year and Postecoglou will certainly be looking to make more of an impression on European football’s biggest stage next season.
McNamara insisted that the attention paid to Postecoglou can hardly come as a surprise given the great work he has done at Parkhead.
“He’s linked to a lot of jobs, but he will be,” he said. “His stock is very high and people have been watching him turn it around at Celtic.
“There has been a huge turnaround at the club in terms of players, but the style and identity is there. You just see them getting better and stronger.
“Ange has been mentioned to a lot of jobs and I’m sure the interest in some of them was much greater than we know.
“He’s not gone and Celtic fans will hope he stays that way for a long time to come because he’s been excellent.”
