According to a media report, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was admitted to a private hospital in the early hours of Thursday.

The 79-year-old Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairwoman arrived at Evercare Hospital from her residence in Gulshan around 1:40 am, BNP media cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan told the Dhaka Tribune newspaper.

Her doctor, Professor AZM Zahid Hossain, said the medical board recommended several tests and she was accommodated in a private cabin after her hospitalization.

The next treatment will be determined after the test results are reviewed, he said.

On August 21, Zia returned home after 45 days of treatment at the same hospital.

The former prime minister, who had been under house arrest for the past five years, was released on August 6 on the orders of Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin.

She was acquitted of all charges against her after the fall of the Awami League government led by her arch-rival Sheikh Hasina on August 5.

The BNP chief has long been battling various ailments including cirrhosis of the liver, arthritis, diabetes and kidney, lung, heart and eye problems. On June 23, a team of specialist doctors successfully implanted a pacemaker in her chest.

Her doctors have been recommending her to travel abroad since she was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver in November 2021.

Earlier this month, Zia was acquitted in five separate cases, including one for celebrating a fake birthday and another for supporting war criminals.

Zia served as Prime Minister of Bangladesh from March 1991 to March 1996, and again from June 2001 to October 2006.
