Ricky Ponting has once again proven that he operates on a different level by predicting the nature of David Warner's dismissal on Day 2 of his farewell Test against Pakistan at the SCG.

In his 112th and final Test, Warner had threatened to go ahead with a big score on his home ground after previously surviving a chance when debutant Saim Ayub slipped on 20.

Resuming at six after a nervous one-over stay late on day one, Warner took one of the morning's shots as he rode Hasan Ali for four hours.

He sent another ball from Hasan between the slips and gully to the rope, while ahead Aamir Jamal also went for four.

But on 34, Warner's time at the crease came to an end.

Faced with a ball from Salman that grabbed and bounced, Warner stood square on the crease and sent the ball to Babar at first slip.

Ponting had uncannily predicted the wicket and called for Salman to come into the bowl.

'Maybe it's worth thinking about a different twist. Salman was quite impressive with his off-spin in the first few Test matches. It's worth spoiling him a little before the lunch break,” Ponting said in his comments.

'And Ricky Ponting has done it again!' said Tim Lane after Warner's wicket fell.

'Salman has come and taken the wicket of Warner, who is deeply frustrated in his last Test because he has laid a foundation but not gone further.'

Ponting added: “What a bowling job it was. I just felt like he's getting a lot more work on the ball than Sajid and that's taken a chunk out of the top of the wicket, squared Warner and off he goes.”

The crowd rose as he walked forward from the center.

But a dejected Warner could only handle a wave of recognition and a quick thumbs up to Marnus Labuschagne, who was next in line for Australia.

Out of respect, Labuschagne allowed Warner to leave the field before coming onto his own.

It remains to be seen how much chance Warner will have to hit again in his SCG swansong later.

Pakistan made a respectable 313 in their first innings, but on a good SCG wicket, runs don't look like they will be difficult to come by in a deep Australian batting order.

Provided Australia can continue their journey with the bat, Pakistan would need to score another score in the second innings to give Warner some hope of a long farewell in the second innings.
