Former Fremantle star Cam McCarthy has had his driver’s license suspended for 10 months after he was caught driving with more than eight times the legal alcohol limit in his system.
The 28-year-old recorded a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.414 when he was apprehended by Western Australia Police near Harvey, about 140 kilometers south of Perth.
Under Australian law it is an offense to drive with a BAC of 0.05 or higher.
The Western Australian reported that Harvey Magistrates Court on Monday disqualified McCarthy’s driver’s license for 10 months and fined him $2,500.
The former AFL player, who failed to appear for his court hearing, was also ordered to pay police costs of $264.

A product of South Fremantle, McCarthy was selected by GWS in 2013 with the 14th choice of the national draft, just behind current Carlton skipper Patrick Cripps.
He kicked 36 goals in two seasons for the Giants before returning to his home state in 2016 after complaining he was ill.
McCarthy asked to be traded to Fremantle in late 2015 while still under contract with the Giants, who denied his request.
The striker was out of football for the entire 2016 season before finally being traded to the Dockers.
He kicked 63 goals in 49 games for the Dockers over three seasons and was the club’s main goalkeeper in his first season with the club.
In August 2020, McCarthy and Fremantle agreed to part ways after the Dockers informed the striker that he would be dropped from the roster for the following season.
“We have been in discussions with Cam and his management about his future at Fremantle,” Dockers managing director Peter Bell said at the time.
“We thought it only fair to let Cam know as soon as possible that his contract was unlikely to be extended beyond the end of the 2020 season.

“On that basis, Cam and his management have discussed the situation with his family and have subsequently informed the club that he would like an early termination of his contract, which has been mutually agreed by all parties.”
Two months earlier, McCarthy was rushed to hospital after collapsing during a non-contact training session.
The attacker was training with team-mate when he suddenly fell to the ground and was immediately assessed by the club’s medical staff and admitted to hospital.
After leaving the Dockers, McCarthy returned to the WAFL, signing a two-year contract with South Fremantle.
