Forget LastPass – Apple just created a new Passwords app that could outdo any other login manager

During WWDC 2024, Apple revealed all the changes coming to its various software platforms later this year. The tech giant debuted iOS 18 and unveiled Apple Intelligence.

Amid all the big reveals, the company also made a number of smaller announcements during the debut of macOS Sequoia that could be just as impactful as the system updates. And one of the features that caught our attention is a new app: Passwords.

Think of it as a first-party version of LastPass. It helps users manage account passwords, verification codes, passcodes, and just about everything in between. Apple’s Passwords app gives you quick access to your login details and organizes everything in an easy-to-use interface.

On the left side of the window you will see each of the six categories into which the logins are placed. One shows you everything currently saved, one for the passcodes and one for Wi-Fi network information.

You will also notice a section for security alerts. If you go to that tab, you may see notifications recommending that you update some of your passwords as they may be too weak, used elsewhere, or compromised. Everything is clearly laid out with a corresponding icon for the account’s website.

Deleted is next to the Security tab, where you can recover supposedly deleted passwords. Among the different categories is the Shared Group section with logins for multiple apps under a specific name. The demonstration shows a group for an entire family and one for the office.

Notable features

Apple states that the Passwords app builds on their long-running keychain system and is a significant upgrade. When it releases later this year, it will be available on macOS Sequoia, iOS 18, iPadOS18, Vision Pro, and PCs via the iCloud for Windows app. Autofill is supported in all different versions, which means that when you log into a site with a login saved for you, it will be filled in automatically.

We’d like to know how well Apple’s software compares to that of LastPass and other password managers. To get the most out of something like LastPass, you’ll have to pay a monthly subscription to get all the features, like “access on all devices.” If the Password app is completely free (and we think it will be), all these managers will get their money’s worth. Either way, we’ll know for sure when the app rolls out with macOS Sequoia later this fall. Or you can wait until July for the public beta.

A barrel was unveiled during the event. Check out Ny Breaking’s overview of the 13 things we learned at WWDC 2024.
