Brisbane Lions star Kate Lutkins has revealed how she juggles motherhood with being a professional athlete – and how she has managed to return to training just three months after her daughter was born.
Lutkins, a three-time All Australian and winner of the 2021 AFLW grand final Best on Ground, missed most of the 2022 season with an ACL injury before becoming pregnant last year.
Lutkins, 35, says being a parent and being an athlete complement each other.
“They both work really well together, and they both bounce off each other – and they make you better at the other one too,” she said Seven news.
‘The nursery is only 10 minutes down the road from the BHA stadium, so I come back and feed her, go back to the stadium and do a run, recovery or gym and then go back to the nursery to feed her again. ‘

Lutkins also has a job with the Australian Defense Force, but admits she had to take a year off after the arrival of daughter Riley.
The star announced the news via Instagram that she was expecting her first child with wife Kate in October 2023.
She posted a photo of herself and partner Kate with their dogs, and another photo from the Disney movie ‘The Lion King’ where the characters say ‘it’s a girl’.
“Look…Kate loves to cook for us (thank goodness), but recently I’ve gotten into baking…” Lutkins wrote.
“We are grateful to announce baby Clarkson on October 23.”
The exciting news was met with well wishes from across the AFLW world, including the Lions club.

“We are all thrilled for Kate and her wife Kate as they begin their journey to parenthood,” said Breeanna Brock, Lions head of women’s soccer.
‘We know she won’t be far away from the Brighton Homes Arena and the group, but we will certainly miss her on the pitch.
“The entire Lions family is happy for Lutsy. She is a great servant of the club and we wish her all the best for this very exciting chapter.”
