Footy star appears to get cosy with a VERY unlikely celebrity friend at the Melbourne Cup

AFL giant Mason Cox and jockey Michelle Payne were spotted enjoying each other’s company on Tuesday.

The famous pair appeared to be getting along in a luxury marquee during the Melbourne Cup at Flemington Race Course.

Photos obtained by Daily Mail Australia show the pair deep in conversation, away from the crowd.

Payne, 39, looked stunning in a gold blazer-style dress that showed off her elegant body.

She paired her ensemble with a statement gold headband and a matching metallic handbag.

Her look was the epitome of glamour, complemented by her radiant, understated makeup, which emphasized her natural beauty.

Meanwhile, Mason, dressed in a light beige suit with a yellow floral lapel pin, looked dapper and a true gentleman as he leaned over and occasionally touched his face as he worked with Payne.

The sight of the footy star and the Melbourne Cup champion sharing a quiet moment was enough to set tongues wagging.

Bystanders commented that they looked extremely comfortable with each other.

Payne is the first and only woman to ever win the Melbourne Cup, although this year’s race featured a record four female jockeys.

Michelle may have retired from jockeying and athletics, but she shone in The Birdcage on Tuesday.

“I’m wearing Jason Crech and we’re dressed in gold for Cup Day,” she told Daily Mail Australia.

The Australian jockey ditched her jodhpurs for a sculpted saffron gold minidress and looked absolutely regal.

Michelle also revealed that she is currently single.

“No,” Australia’s golden girl replied with a laugh when she cheekily asked if she has a love interest at the moment.

“I’m still looking.”

When she was 18 years old, Michelle was thrown from her horse. She fractured her skull and suffered bruising to her brain.

She had no short-term memory for two months and even broke her wrist during recovery.

It was thrilling to be reminded of her victory as the first (and still the only) female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup since it was first held in 1861 – and on a horse at odds of 100 to 1.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted both Michelle and Mason for comment.
