Geelong hero Steve Johnson was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after a freak accident involving a sharp knife.

According to News Corp, the former superstar goalkeeper spent Monday evening in Wangaratta Hospital after suffering a wound to his stomach when a knife in a bag he was carrying pierced his abdomen.

As he opened a gate at his home, the knife made contact with the gate and then pierced the bag and then into his stomach.

A neighbor who works as a nurse helped Johnson by applying pressure to the wound as it bled profusely.

News Corp reports he is lucky to be alive as the hospital was ready for a patient with a deep stomach wound thanks to a life-saving call from the nurse.

Johnson, one of the greatest goalkeepers in modern football, suffered damage to his intestines and remained in the same hospital on Tuesday evening, although he is expected to make a full recovery.

The former Cats and Giants star has scored 516 goals across 293 games in the AFL.
