- Williams had a long and distinguished football career across two codes
Formerly making a living by beating some of the strongest men in the world on the field and in the boxing ring, Sonny Bill Williams has shown his softer side as he broke down in tears in a heartwarming video.
The 38-year-old former NRL and All Blacks star couldn’t contain his joy and pride as his sons left for their first day of school on Tuesday morning.
“My children, it is their first day of school. I’m getting emotional,” he said as he put his hand over his face to hide his tears in a video posted to his social media.
‘My two boys are going to school this year. My oldest son has a tie on and my youngest son wears a uniform,” he continued.
Williams was overcome with emotion as his two sons prepared to leave for their first day of school – and said his wife was also in tears
‘I just wanted to say: life moves fast…enjoy it.
“Hold them tight, especially with what’s happening in the world today.
‘My wife is crying too! Thankful for everything.’
Williams and his wife Alana have four children: daughters Iman and Aisha, and sons Zaid and Essa.
Essa is the youngest of the bunch and the footy star shared an emotional message when he was born in February 2020, accompanied by a photo of him cradling the newborn in hospital.

‘Alhamdulillah Alhamdulillah Alhamdulillah! Baby and mother are healthy and well. The stress levels are not as high the fourth time around, but the love we have for this child is the same,” he wrote.
Alhamdulillah is Arabic for ‘praise be to God’.
The doting dad also shared a sweet video clip of himself rocking his son to sleep as the little boy lay on his chest.
“To get that skin-to-skin #myson. #AlwaysAlhamdulillah,” he said.
Williams and his wife celebrated their tenth anniversary in May last year, after the couple met in 2013.
It was a whirlwind moment when they got married just four weeks after their first date.

When Alana decided to wear a hijab in August 2022, Williams – a devout Muslim – described it as “one of the proudest moments of my life.”
‘My wife is a hijabi!’ he tweeted to his followers.
‘Alhamdullilah, my wife decided to wear the headscarf. One of the proudest moments of my life.
‘What makes it so special is that she did it for Allah SWT and no one else. May the Most High always bless you with good health, contentment and happiness.”
‘SWT’ is an abbreviation of the Arabic ‘Subhanahu wa ta’ala’, which means ‘the most glorified’.
