Ben Cousins has revealed the strange injury that forced him to wear a sling.

The leg great, 45, described himself as an ‘old b***ard’ after tearing his bicep while wearing trainers. The gruesome injury forced him to have quick surgery on his shoulder.

“I’ve had a problem with my shoulder, just wear and tear and a few other parts that have slowed me down for a while now,” Cousins told Mix 94.5.

“It’s been something I’ve had to pick up for a while, but I was just trying to hold off until the end of the football season when things — time-wise — freed up a little bit.

“And then I, just a few weeks ago, tore my biceps tendon as well, which meant I had to go in and get it fixed.”

When asked how he suffered the injury, West Coast great Cousins - who won the 2005 Brownlow Medal – replied: ‘Good question.’

“I was in a bit of a rush, I literally walked out the front door and went to slip on my sneakers without untying the laces,” he continued.

“My shoulder joint felt like it just rolled through the ligaments, it was like a jar.

“It wasn’t too painful, but it didn’t feel good.”

Cousins admitted he didn’t think much of the incident as he was rushing to leave the house. The moment he got into his car, he knew something was wrong.

“I just went to turn the key and I remembered the last MRI I had, they said ‘you’ve got this ligament that’s just hanging,'” he said.

And then, I pulled up the sleeve and there was this big ball in the middle of my arm, so it actually rolled down my arm.

“That’s what it was… it had rolled down the wing.”

Cousins realized it was time to stop postponing surgery and fix the injury.

‘I thought ‘this will do me’. If I can rip my biceps wearing sneakers, you old b***ard,’ he said.

“It really had to be fixed. It just meant I had to go in and do it, rather than putting it off to do it in my own time.’
