Footy commentators stood down after ‘mock Indigenous accent’ incident as league launches investigation

  • Two commentators have resigned
  • An alleged racist remark was made on the radio
  • An investigation into the incident has been launched

Two Toowoomba Rugby League commentators have been suspended pending an investigation into alleged racist comments made on radio.

Commentator Andrew O’Brien has been accused of using a “fake native accent” while covering the A-Grade match between the Dalby Diehards and the Pittsworth Danes on June 30.

The comments have led to an investigation into a possible violation of the code of conduct.

During the match, O’Brien was heard saying “I’m fine, brus, play the ball,” after which co-commentator Anthony Breeze asked “is that how he talks? He’s a white guy.”

O’Brien replies, “No, that’s just how I talk.”

The audio of the match has now been edited on TRL’s Facebook page so that the controversial moment can no longer be heard.

The league confirmed it was investigating the matter after the Queensland Rugby League Positive Environment Program filed a report.

‘Toowoomba Rugby League (TRL) confirms the organisation is investigating an incident that occurred during the A-grade match between Pittsworth and Dalby.

‘It is alleged that the TRL Call Team broadcast violated the code of conduct, with a commentator allegedly using a ‘fake native accent’ during the broadcast.

An incident report was filed under the QRL Positive Environment Program, following which the TRL initiated an investigation.

‘The commentators involved have been withdrawn from the TRL Call Team pending the outcome of the investigation.

‘In addition, one of the commentators, who is also a TRL board member, has resigned from the TRL board pending the outcome of the investigation.

‘Queensland Rugby League (QRL) is providing assistance with the process being conducted by the TRL.

‘While it is very disappointing to hear about this incident, we have strict procedures and policies in place to address such issues across the game.

‘There is no place for racist behaviour in sport or in wider society.

‘Racism must be tackled in all its forms.

‘While people bring their own beliefs and behaviours into the sporting world, rugby league as a whole continues to make it clear what our expectations are when you enter our environment.

‘If individuals or clubs do not meet these expectations, we will be unequivocal in the sanctions we impose.’
