Football fans were left stunned after Liverpool announced the signing of Sam Kerr in the Women’s Super League, but Chelsea supporters were quick to see the funny side of the situation.
The Reds have secured the services of one Sam Kerr, but it turns out to be a Scottish midfielder with the same name.
Kerr, 25, will be based on Merseyside after joining English giants Bayern Munich on loan.
It didn’t take long for followers of the global game to make fun of the unusual namesake scenario.
“I almost broke my phone,” one person commented Tweet from Liverpool about X.
“Doesn’t she play for Chelsea,” asked another.

Kerr was at the wedding of Matildas teammate Emily van Egmond to her father Roger when she heard about the crash in Perth.
A ute is said to have driven onto the footpath in an attempt to overtake a bus, hitting an electricity pole before hitting Ms Kerr – a man, 63, has since been charged with one count of dangerous driving occasioning serious bodily harm
A third said: ‘I was shocked for a moment.’
Matildas captain Kerr has no plans to leave the Blues as she recovers from a cruciate ligament injury 12 months ago.
She was recently in Portugal on a training camp with the WSL ladder leaders and is believed to be targeting a return to competitive football in February or March.
The 31-year-old Chelsea star has had a rough few weeks after learning her grandmother was hit by a car in late December.
The incident occurred after Coral, 89, got off a bus near her home in Perth.
The 63-year-old driver allegedly crashed his car into the curb while trying to overtake a bus and has since been charged.
Kerr and her father Roger were in NSW’s Hunter Valley celebrating the wedding of Matildas teammate Emily Van Egmond when they heard of the incident.
Kerr also attended the wedding with her partner, West Ham star Kristie Mewis, who recently announced she was having a baby.
The couple, who got engaged last year, have been dating since 2020.
