Footage of Danielle Collins’ tense argument with an opponent resurfaces amid Australian Open criticism

Danielle Collins’ controversial past actions are coming back to the fore following the influx of criticism she is receiving over her antics at the Australian Open on Thursday.

Collins’ post-match discussion with world number 2 Iga Swiatek from the Paris Olympics resurfaced, showing the 31-year-old was open even outside Melbourne.

After a quarterfinal match last August, in which Collins retired in the third set due to an abdominal injury, she criticized Swiatek for being “disingenuous” about her injury when they spoke on the court after the match, she said.

‘A lot happens on camera. And there are a lot of people with a lot of charisma… (who) are in front of the camera one way and in the locker room another way,” Collins told reporters afterward via AP. “I don’t need the fakeness.”

Collins said the injury stemmed from cramps and dehydration and that she “nearly collapsed” after leaving the court following the previous match.

Swiatek was confused to the Polish press as to why Collins had a problem with her.

Today, Collins put her hand to her ear, blew kisses to the crowd and slapped her backside after a three-set victory over Destanee Aiava.

“During the game I was thinking, ‘While I’m here, I might as well take that big paycheck,’” Collins said as she was booed in her on-field interview. ‘We like a five-star holiday, so a lot of it will go there.’

“So thank you guys, thank you for coming out here and supporting us tonight. Thanks guys, I love you.”

Collins initially said the 2024 tennis season would be her last before enjoying unprecedented mainstream success.

In addition to making Team USA, she at one point won 15 matches in a row and claimed her first WTA 1000 title at her hometown Miami Open. Collins also had her personal best, a fourth-round performance at Wimbledon.

The number 10 ranked Collins returns to the Australian hard court against compatriot Madison Keys in the early hours of Saturday morning.

It could be a home field advantage for Keys, despite being on the other side of the world from her competition.
