Foodies have been baffled after discovering the flavor of Haribo’s green gummy bears as the meaning behind the brand’s name is also revealed.

Candy lovers noticed that the gummy bear package says the green flavor should be strawberry and not apple or lime as many thought.

Haribo has also explained that the name comes from an acronym of the founder’s name and the city in which he was born.

Hans Riegel, who founded Haribo in 1920, hails from Bonn in Germany, just south of Cologne and is also known as the birthplace of composer Beethoven.

The discovery featured on the packaging sparked a lively discussion online among fans of the lollipop brand who said they thought the green flavor was watermelon, lime or apple.

“I was sure they had apple flavor. Man, now I don’t know what to think,’ one woman said.

‘That’s why I like the green one! I thought it was weird because I usually only like pink/red strawberry candies,’ another replied.

“I literally noticed this today for the first time in my life on the back of a bag of Xmas Haribo Gummy Bears. I’ve been eating this one forever and always assumed it was just a variation of apple,” a third added.
