Food always tastes better in good company | Short letters

Like Grace Dent, I also eat alone, but unlike her, I don’t enjoy it (“A self-care date night”: Gen Z and millennials embrace the joys of eating alone, Oct. 25). Sharing a meal in good company is a pleasure. It helps us stay healthy in a time of increasing isolationism. I love cooking, but not being able to share with others during challenging conversations makes it a boring activity.

As I approached my 85th birthday, I recently subjected myself to an adult driver assessment offered by IAM RoadSmart. It involved an hour of driving on city roads, provincial roads and highways with a qualified IAM assessor. Labeling food bought in stores is all very well (report, October 28), but what is crucial is strict regulation of fast-food restaurants. Every day during the school year I see Bexleyheath Broadway busy after school with hundreds of schoolchildren eating from chicken shops and McDonald’s. Unfortunately, most of them are overweight. This sight is recreated throughout the country.
