Folded Eras: Taylor Swift’s beloved Scottish Fold cats make the purrr-fect companions

The breed of Taylor Swift’s beloved cats has been named as Britain’s most affectionate and intelligent breed.

A new study from Burns Pet Nutrition has revealed that the Scottish Fold has been voted the ‘top cat’ by the British.

The Scottish Fold has risen in popularity in recent years, with pop star Taylor Swift owning a pair called Meredith Gray and Olivia Benson and Ed Sheeran owning one called Calippo.

The little ear fungi have charmed pet owners across the country, with 75 percent of respondents considering them the most intelligent and 67 percent considering them the most affectionate.

The survey also found that a whopping 92 percent of cat owners felt they were the easiest to train compared to other breeds.

The popularity of Scottish Folds has skyrocketed, with 110,000 sold in Britain alone in 2021, with the rise partly due to the breed's association with social media celebrities.

Meanwhile, Ragdoll cats, known for their love of being held and cuddled, came a close second in the poll.

More than half (56 percent) of Brits rated Ragdolls as the most affectionate, ahead of Maine Coons at 46 percent.

In terms of personality, more than half (56 percent) of Brits said Ragdolls had the biggest personalities, with 46 percent preferring Maine Coons and 41 percent preferring Bengals.

The survey, which included responses from 2,041 pet owners, also provided insight into how the colors of cat breeds influence training and affection.

Calico cats proved to be the easiest to train; eight in ten owners reported that their tricolor pets responded best to instructions, and half of these owners also noted that their cats were incredibly affectionate.

Among tabby owners, 25 percent claimed their pets were cuddlier than other cats of color, while 85 percent claimed they were the easiest to train.

Nutrition manager at Burns Pet Nutrition, Laura Crotch Harvey, said: ‘All cat breeds are often unfairly lumped together.

‘But just like dogs, cats have very different personalities and needs, from care, stimulation, exercise and nutrition.

She added: ‘It’s clear that those looking for the perfect companion should research the different breeds carefully to ensure they choose the cat that best suits them and their lifestyle.’

With the Scottish Fold topping the charts, it’s clear that these celebrity-loved cats are more than just a pretty face: they’re intelligent, affectionate and a joy to train.

It comes after welfare charity Cats Protection called for a ban on the breeding of Scottish Folds due to concerns about their health in 2022.

The charity is also unhappy with A-listers for driving a huge increase in demand for pets.
