Folarin Balogun makes his debut for the United States men’s national team just weeks after rejecting England for America.

The New York-born striker, who spent this season on loan at Arsenal’s Reims, was also eligible to represent England and Nigeria but committed to the Stars and Stripes on May 16.

He was named to BJ Callaghan’s first team – for the CONCACAF Nations League – at the start of the month and was nominated against Mexico on Thursday night.

The 21-year-old is expected to battle for ninth in the starting line-up after a season in which he scored 20 goals in Ligue 1.

Balogun’s made his one-off move to the US after appearing for England at Under-17, U18, U20 and U21 levels. He also appeared for the USA at U18 level, deciding to represent his native country after being rejected by England.

“My decision to represent the United States came with my family,” he said in a statement after the move became official.

“It ended up being a no-brainer, but it’s definitely something I wanted to do and it feels like I’m at home here.

“Representing the United States means a lot, more than people would know. I am very proud and honored to be given this opportunity and I want to give everything to make our team successful.”
