Florida Wheel of Fortune contestant sparks hilarity after getting wrong answer to letter food riddle: ‘HOT TOASTED BA_ELS WITH LO_ AND CREAM CHEESE’

  • Angie Gautney was roundly mocked on Twitter as a result of a TV mistake
  • Teacher went viral after simple answer failed on Wheel of Fortune
  • Pat Sajak told social media last year to stop making fun of contestants.

A Wheel of Fortune contestant went viral for all the wrong reasons after she failed to solve a simple puzzle in the Food and Drink category on the long-running game show.

Angie Gautney, a Florida resident, appeared on the March 1 episode and had already won over $6,000 when she tried to solve the riddle: ‘HOT BA_ELS TOAST WITH LO_ AND CREAM CHEESE.’

“I’m going to try to solve it,” Gautney said with little confidence after successfully guessing that there was a “B” in the puzzle. She offered: ‘HOT TOASTED BAGELS WITH BAJA CHEESE AND CREAM.’ “No, it’s not right,” said host Pat Sajak, 76, when the wrong buzzer rang.

The next contestant correctly asked for an ‘X’ to be shown. That person got it right: ‘HOT TOASTED BAGELS WITH LOX AND CREAM CHEESE’.

“Yeah, that’s a much better recipe,” Sajak said as co-host Vanna White revealed the correct answer.

In a Facebook post before her episode aired, Angie Gautney warned that it could be embarrassing.

The puzzle Gautney just couldn’t solve

Bagels with cream cheese and smoked salmon, a cut of brined salmon, were brought to the US from Eastern Europe by Jewish immigrants over 100 years ago and are one of the most popular breakfast items on the East Coast.

Gautney, who works as a teacher at Stetson Baptist Christian School in North Deland, Florida, still walked away from the show with $7,300 in prize money.

He announced his appearance on the show in a Facebook post on March 1.

‘This night is the night! There will be some embarrassing moments, but it was a fun experience! Wish I could do it again! she wrote.

Unfortunately, Gautney’s response drew ire and jokes from Twitter.

Understandably, Gautney’s response draws Twitter ire and jokes.

‘With ‘BASS and cream cheese’… This is a shame. Somebody get us her @ so we can hook her up with LOX and cream cheese,” Bagel Boss wrote.

“OMG someone just guessed hot toasted bagels with LOW and cream cheese instead of lox that’s so embarrassing I’d never show my face again,” another viewer said.

‘She said ‘come down’, I’m not kidding. Oi vey….’ said RetiredGuy999.

“The absolute verbal abuse my mom and I yelled at this lady on the Ferris wheel who didn’t know what lox was #WheelOfFortune,” another user tweeted.

Not everyone on Twitter was mean to Gautney

At least one person sympathized with Gautney.

“Warm toasted bagel with lox and cream cheese” was the puzzle on the Ferris wheel. What the hell is lox? said Tweetin Jackleg.

I’m from New York so obviously I know what lox is on a bagel. I wonder if the rest of the US does, or if that was just a rough guess. wondered another tweeter.

In March 2022, Pat Sajak took to Twitter to defend contestants accused of not answering simple riddles correctly and thus being roundly mocked.

“It always hurts me when nice people come on our show to play and win some money and maybe fulfill a lifelong dream, and then get ridiculed online when they make a mistake or something goes wrong,” he tweeted.

Sajak said that he would never make fun of a guest because they are “good people in a bad situation.” He tweeted that people sitting in the comfort of their homes cannot understand the pressure the contestants are under.

‘After all, you may be there one day. And nobody wants to trend on Twitter,” Sajak said at the end of his thread.
