A Florida mother is filing a lawsuit against American Airlines after claiming the airline lost her two children after putting them in a room resembling a jail cell overnight while they traveled alone.
Amber Vencill claims her 12 and 10-year-old sons were left without food, water, blankets or pillows after their flight was cancelled.
The boys, identified only as “JV” and “RV,” used American Airline’s unaccompanied minors service on July 30, 2022.
They would take a flight from Missouri to upstate New York, where Vencill’s partner would pick them up after a layover in Charlotte.

However, the flight was delayed and eventually cancelled. The airline was forced to call Vencill’s partner, who was identified as Ted.
American Airlines officials told Ted, according to the lawsuit, that Vencill’s sons would be in a “nice room for unaccompanied minors, where there were beds and a private bathroom.”
Shortly thereafter, American Vencill sent an email on July 30 at 11:40 PM informing them that the children would fly the next day at 5 PM, as scheduled. Insider.
Due to the conflicting information, Vencill had “no idea which flight her children would be on.”
A phone number provided by American Airlines was of no use and she was unable to contact her children for hours until an employee at Charlotte’s Douglas International Airport connected her to one of the children.
The son then rattled off the gruesome details, according to the complaint: “They had not eaten or drunk anything since the night before, not even a pretzel or snacks normally given out by the airline.”
The employee, who Vencill described as “friendly” in the suit, was finally able to get the boys some food and drinks.
“The worst part was that they were in an airport, they could have been taken anywhere,” said David Jaroslawicz, Vencill’s attorney. “They were in an airport with all kinds of nuts around.”
Instead, they found themselves in a room that “looked like a prison cell” where it was “icy” cold and were forced to try to sleep on a couch with the lights on.
The boys were reportedly kept in a room “resembling a prison cell” that was “icy” cold and were forced to try to sleep on a couch with the lights on.
According to the lawsuit, Vencill was reimbursed $150 to cover the costs of the unaccompanied minors.
The lawsuit describes the children as now afraid of flying after what they describe as behavior that violates U.S. policy, calling it “reckless, careless and negligent.”
“Particularly offensive is that, after learning of their obvious failures, Defendant offered only a hollow apology and a refund, essentially saying to Plaintiff, sorry we lost your children’s lady, but here’s your money back,” the lawsuit adds.
The lawsuit seeks an undisclosed amount of damages.
