Former NFL player Kevin Hobbs, who serves as defensive coordinator for Tampa Bay Tech High. Hobbs posted the video to X, formerly Twitter, which has been viewed more than 1.5 million times.

Hobbs issued his own statement about the ordeal, adding the hashtag #shameful.

The role of a coach goes beyond shaping young athletes into great football players; it is about transforming them into exceptional individuals within our society. You should NEVER reach a point where you feel it necessary to participate in this,” he said

It is unclear at this time whether legal action will be taken.

The school’s president issued a formal statement after the incident.

“I am writing to inform you of an incident that occurred last Friday evening at the Jesuits’ home football game.

“Between plays on the field, one of our part-time assistant coaches hit a Jesuit player in the helmet as the player left the field and came to the sideline.

“This behavior is contrary to what the school stands for and is completely inconsistent with the expectations we have of coaches, moderators and faculty members, who should be role models for our students and mentors in their development as young men,”

“We have contacted the student, who was not injured in the incident, and his family.

“We met with the coach and informed him that he will no longer coach Jesuit football or assist the school in any other capacity.

“Jesuit’s mission is to provide Christian formation and education to our students. This requires that we maintain an environment for them that is safe, supportive and conducive to their well-being and growth. This standard applies to all activities, both inside and outside the classroom.

“We are reviewing our internal procedures and staff training to ensure this standard is adhered to by all Jesuit staff, full-time and part-time.

“Thank you for your prayers and encouragement to help us better fulfill our mission,” the statement read.

The Jesuit High School football team defeated Tampa Catholic 66-35. It was the team’s last game of the regular season.
