Florida children make terrifying discovery while playing in abandoned home

In a scene reminiscent of a Hollywood coming-of-age film, a group of Florida children make a gruesome discovery while exploring an abandoned house.

The local children, all boys, were exploring the area on Thursday when they came across the house on Memorial Drive in Avon Park.

The boys decided to take a look and were stunned to discover skeletal remains.

Witnesses at the home said the boys came outside and described what they had seen, looking “white as sheets.”

Eventually, police arrived on the scene to investigate the contents of the house.

They told the Highlands News-Sun that they had found the remains of a deceased person in the house.

Officials believed the person had been dead for 12 months before the boys found them.

According to local sheriff’s deputies, the bones were found among clothing that was just a short distance away, collecting dust.

A sleeping bag was also found nearby, meaning it is likely the person was staying there illegally when he/she died.

The house is abandoned and never discovered, as it is covered with tall mimosa trees and other shrubs.

They say that people driving past are often not even aware the house is there.

Police suspect that the house had been in disrepair for some time before the person died.

Not only was the undergrowth overgrown, but they also found it completely dilapidated.

The house was abandoned and never discovered because it was covered with tall mimosa trees and other undergrowth, officials said.

Officers even reported hearing a buzzing beehive in the walls of the house.

The remains have yet to be identified, pending the local coroner’s investigation.

Public information officer Scott Dressel uses the incident to remind children to stay away from these types of homes.

He adds that they risked disturbing not only themselves, but also the beehive inside.

The Highlands County Sheriff Office is asking anyone with information about the home or the person who died inside to contact them.
