A council desperate for new blood is offering buyers the chance to purchase their fully serviced land at auction starting at less than $10.
Cheap plots, ranging from 809 square meters to 1,303 hectares, in North Queensland’s Flinders Shire have been put up for auction with a reserve price of just $9.
The initiative aims to increase the local population, with 48 blocks for sale in the rural towns of Hughenden, Prairie and Torrens Creek, a three-hour drive from Townsville.

Forty-eight blocks of land are for sale in the suburbs of Hughenden, Prairie and Torrens Creek. They vary in size from 809m2 to 1,303 hectares (in the photo one of the lots for sale)
The lots will be sold via an online auction from February 10-13, and the council expects them to achieve a sale well in excess of their single-figure reserve.
The lot is flat with power and sewer connections and is close to supermarkets, medical and senior care centers, three schools, a recreational lake, an early learning center, parks, and a community pool.
In addition to the initial bargain price, Flinders Shire council is offering housing grants of $5,000 to eligible applicants.
Flinders Shire council has a population of 1,521 and the initiative aims to increase the region’s population and stimulate economic growth.
Mayor Jane McNamara said it would be hard to find a better deal anywhere else in Australia.
“The 48 blocks of land for sale offer an incredible opportunity for people to invest in building affordable housing,” said Cr McNamara.
‘Whether you’re looking to retire and need an affordable home base for travel, are a young person or have a young family looking to own their first home, or an investor wanting a high return on investment, these blocks of land will adapt to you.
‘The large size of the blocks means that you will be able to enjoy the wide open spaces that the region has to offer.
‘Flinders Shire is located just a short drive from Charters Towers and Townsville.’
